I've always wanted to float the controversial idea that rape - and the subsequent trauma that comes with it - can account for some of its long-term psychological effects and issues because we, as a society, deem it to be the most terrible thing that can happen to someone.

I wonder what the world would be like if we treated assaults of a sexual nature on a similar level to a mugging.

Shit, I clicked on that video expecting a sort of Frankie Boyle comedy routine, it certainly was not. It also reminds me of a story I read on the Ladbible which I personally thought was disgusting with the sentence the woman got and I was equally horrifide at the comments by other people, 99% males.

EDIT: Found the story I was talking about:

Dammit man. I also expected something funny.

Whelp, I've been on a roll with writing text walls about society on this forum, so fuck it. Time to write another one!

I've always wanted to float the controversial idea that rape - and the subsequent trauma that comes with it - can account for some of its long-term psychological effects and issues because we, as a society, deem it to be the most terrible thing that can happen to someone.

I agree with you on the idea that the negative affects are due to how society has brought us up. However, I believe that rape being rape is way more specific than it has to be. Rape is so traumatic because it contradicts expectations that we thought were fundamental. Society drills ideas of how life should be into our heads. Many of these concepts are formed at a young age. Some examples of this are

1. I am safe in my own home

2. If I try my hardest, I will be able to achieve something

3. I have control over my own body

4. Bad things won't happen to me if I have good behavior

I think we can agree that these 4 principles are incredibly fundamental to life in a functional society. Rape already has a good chance of violating all 4. It isn't just that people saying rape is bad is what traumatizes us. It is that it counters pretty much every single expectation of life that we have formed. Not only this, but many parts around the world are complete shitheads when it comes to communicating about sexual situations. Rape victims get their whole world turned upside down, become incredibly vulnerable, and what do people do? Treat them like trash. This is why rape victims blame themselves. You've got fundamental concepts 2, 3, and 4. 2: "I must have wanted it because if I had tried my hardest, I would have been able to stop it". 3: "I felt stimulated, so I must have wanted it". 4: "My family and friends are leaving me, I must have done something wrong". Their minds get poisoned with these negative thoughts and they start hating themselves.

Rape is such a difficult issue to deal with. What is rape anyway? There is no true definition. Everyone has their own opinion of it and they will treat you a certain way based on that opinion. Legally, you have this huge fucking penalty that is life ruining (arguably more damaging than actually getting raped) and the criteria is gray as fuck. This is a lose-lose situation. If the legal side of it wasn't so controversial, I think that society would be a lot more accepting of rape victims. Then again though, just like the victims getting their expectations shattered, the ones close to the inflicters get their expectations shattered too, causing them to lash out. "I know this person and this person wouldn't do that. That other person must have wanted it/ is lying." No matter what happens with the legal side, rape victims will always lose some of their support structure simply due to that.

AND THIS IS WITHOUT ME WRITING ABOUT THE DISGUSTING HYPOCRISIES BETWEEN GENDERS WHEN IT COMES TO RAPE!

I actually wanted to see comments. I don't know anyone that has been raped before personally but have met a few. I'm honestly disgusted at what the chances are of you being raped these days and even worse when you join the military. You have 1 in 3 chances being raped. Throughout my military career there has been more than a couple dozen incidents and majority of them being made on male on male not the occasional male on female might I add. Ex: just 3 guys drinking one night and two of the guys blank out while the third stays sober enough to rape them both while they both lay unconscious in their beds. These numbers don't even add with the ones that don't end up reporting it because they feel too embarrassed over what has happen to them and what they can be seen as. This is something that should be taken a lot more seriously in the mass media than it already does. In the military I can't tell you how much of these classes and seminars we have to sit through upon hours and hours about sexual abuse/rape assault etc. If only they used a lot more of those commercials about anti-rape etc in mass media TV it would definitely help out a lot more, no one can be trusted especially the military personnel. Many times I feel ashamed to even wear the uniform.

It's pretty crazy that when it is reported that someone was raped, it is assumed that they were female even though the numbers are much closer to 50/50 than we'd think. I suppose this is a side effect of the anti-rape campaign being dominated by women. However, I wouldn't blame them for this outcome as there is much more that goes into it like perceived gender roles (women being fragile and vulnerable, while men aren't). It would be cool if those feminist groups that generally talk about these types of issues (spousal abuse for example) would bring men into the equation. I think some of them do, but I would have to question the motives of the ones that don't.

Muuuum! MRA and TheRedPill are leaking!

What's that? I'm assuming it is some sort of mens' rights thing.

The problem with feminism and a lot of those other types of groups (gun rights/ gun law activists, pro choice/ life, basically everything) is that the loudest ones are always the most extreme ones. Feminism is a much more widespread movement than your typical good intentions movement and there is a lot of room for it to spout ideas. This means that it encompasses much more area than others, so it is harder to go out of the inner circle and read other points. I think most of the feminist extremists start off as reasonable people, but get absorbed into those extreme works and never pop their heads out to see opposing views. They surround themselves with people that agree and in turn, it strengthens their viewpoint to extremes.

This is what is scary. Women are the majority population. If they buy into those extremist views, they COULD actually get them to go somewhere. This isn't like your typical small minority group that has little to no actual power. This is a powerful majority group that pretends to be a minority. If you are a man, you SHOULD feel at least a little threatened by them. Now, I'm not saying that they will enslave us or some bullshit like that, but there are plenty of misleading statistics out there that can be used to push forward a law that is against equality. For example, there are statistically fewer women in management positions, so lets give a tax cut to corporations that hire women in management. This statistic is completely useless if 80% of the applicants are male and yet, it can still be used to push something forward.

This wouldn't be a problem if people were naturally critical thinkers and aware of their own flaws. Unfortunately, that seems like too much to ask.

MRA is men's rights and TheRedPill is some "alpha" male mixed in with sexual repression, extreme misogyny and PUA tactics in one unholy spawn. MRA used to be reasonable - espoused things like equality when it comes to doling out children post-divorce, pointing to the heavy mother bias. It's become another misogynist joke as of late, at least within the forums I visit.

Feminism is actually developing a counter-movement of sorts due to the extreme views it can sponsor, but you are right in that the minorities within certain groups are often more vocal. I would have called out something a RadFem or TERF would have said just as much.

Women are very slightly the majority in some places. In others, the predilection of a female fetus to "spontaneously" abort mean there is a vast majority of males.

As a man, I don't feel even slightly threatened by women, or the non-radical feminists. That's absurd. Even as a majority, not all are feminist, not all are radicalised (very few are, I would say), some radical ones are trapped forever within Tumblr. Point being, given that women are not one homogeneous mass, no person should be scared or threarened. The example you gave is a misguided law, to be sure, it would be better to find the causes of lack of female representation than to go ahead with a tax break.

If this majority-in-minority' clothing, as you put it, had such a profound effect or influence, one wonders why places like the USA can't seem to decide on the issues of legal abortion, women's health and contraception. In fact, you see laws contrary to most feminist ideology being passed - try to limit or shut down family planning, restrict free contraceptive pill to women (but keep free viagra for men).

Thank religion for that lol. I see those things as a non christian vs christian type of issue than a man vs woman thing. Religion is another bag of worms :/ . Good for community, bad for teaching an absolute "right" and "wrong" to children. Morality is something that needs to be dynamic. We have brains for a reason -.- (not all religions do this, but a lot of the Christian/Catholic ones that dominate the USA do)

And yeah, I'm not very concerned about feminists, but it is scary to think about the potential and how things can change in just a few decades. The potential IS there. Not entirely likely, but it still exists, and that is unsettling.
