[Tutorial-Windows/Mac] How to take a real screenshot

Recommended Posts

So you want to take a screenshot eh?

Sure.

You post it to Imps, and to your utter horror, You get replies like "I am not waiting for the image to load."

PREPOSTOROUS!

BURN THOSE INFIDELS!

Well, they have a point.

Nobody wants to load a 5 meg image of something you did.

Especially since it probably sucked anyway.

Back to the point.

I'll teach you how to take a screenshot in the not-so-lameass way.

OH BUT MISTER ROBBIE, I DUN HAVE PHOTOSHOP.

Shut the fuck up.

Now.

You dont need photoshop.

Just paint, Or insert Mac program here~

Alright.

Windows

Hit the printscreen button. this will immediately take a snap of whatever is one the screen at the time.

BAM!

(Alternately, Use Alt+Printscreen to snap only the active window)

screensqq1.jpg

I cropped mine a lil. But i only used paint.

Simply Open paint, and hit control V. Or go edit > Paste. Lamer.

Now, Go save as.

Change your filetype to .JPG

.JPG will yield the smallest filesize, although you lsoe some quality, It's a sacrafice you have bloody better be willing to make.

OH BUT MISTER ROBBIE, ITS ON MY PC, I DUN KNOW WHERE TO HOST IT.

Shut the fuck up! I'm not done!

Now. open your browser of choice.

In the lil' address bar, type in WWW.IMAGESHACK.US

Its just the easiest for me, since it hosts a multitude of filetypes.

Click the browse button, and select your file.

BUT MISTER ROBBIE, I CANT FIND THE FILE.

Suicide vs Wall.

Now click HOST!

Once it is hosted, there will be boxes, like so:

screensae8.jpg

You wasnt the box that says "Direct link to image".

now make youe topic on Imps.

BUT MISTER ROBBIE, IVE BEEN BANNED FROM IMPS!

I thought i told you to kill yourself!?

On with the show.

You need to copy that direct link, and paste it between the image tags, like so.

Screenshots for the Mac user:

There are few ways to take a simple screenshot. All of them will give your fingers a much needed stretch.

1. [ Shift + Command + 3 ]

This takes a picture of your entire screen.

2. [ Shift + Command + 4 ]

This changes your cursor so you can select what you want to screen. Hold down the mouse button and draw a box over what you want to screen. When you are ready, realease the mouse button and the screenshot will be taken.

3. [ Shift + Command + 4 + Spacebar ]

This will allow you to sceenshot whatever window you highlight.

The files will be saved as a PDF on your desktop.

Now if you don't have Photoshop or some other image editing software, things get a little complicated since the Mac Preview application doesn't give you a whole lot of control. There is a way to crop and convert the PDF to JPG/PNG with Preview. But scaling your image so it's not a huge file is a little difficult.

Drag the PDF into the Mac Preview program.

If you need to crop the image, use the select tool [ Command + 3 ] to highlight the area you want to crop. The press [ Command + K ] to crop.

Under the file menu you can export the image as a JPG or PNG [ Shift + Command + E ]

Now you have a cropped image, but the size is still 100%.

----------

Put in a caption, write how 1337/666 you are, etc.

and post away.

The image wont take years to load, AND YOU CAN BE 1337 AT THE SAME TIME!

Love,

~Rob.

Notes:

- Macintosh also comes with a screen shot application called Grab. I believe it is located under Utilities. You may find it useful. (Thanks to Devilix for the info.)

- Avoid .BMP like the plague.

- You can get programs that take screensnaps for you, and automatically save them in an individual directory.

- Microsoft Paint has one of the worst .JPG save quality ever. Use Photoshop if possible.

Better to use .PNG as a graphics format than JPG. PNG has better quality compared to compression with dofus-like screenshots.

PNG is quite a bit larger. JPG is just fine, i never seem to experience quality loss.

oh, and dont use DIRTY imageshack.

How do you get rid of all the whtie stuff when you resize in Paint? I put it at 150% which is still pretty nice, but the outer edge is like...still white. Got any tips on how to make the screen a good size when hosting? Or is the "Change screen size to 800 by 600" thingy enough?

Thanks for the guide btw, just hosted first pic and could see the words!

First, don't resize in paint.

Paint is free for a reason.

Get Photoshop, it makes everything a breeze.

Or alternatively, use Irfanview (also free, but quite good despite lack of Photoshop cloneitude). Not only is it fantastic for resizing, it gives you the option of saving in a variety of different sexy formats; I also suggest PNG for added sexitude, particularly when taking a screenshot with a lot of solid colours, though JPG is fine if you're trying to minimise your filesize. Potential loss of sexiness can result with JPG images though.

Really, JPG is ideal for dofus screenshots, being a flash application, it doesn't need mega high detail.

I'll make it a bit easier. :P

Step 1

Click this link. You can skip it if you'd like by going directly to Step 2

Step 2

Download Howie's Quick Screen Capture Tool.

Step 3

Install on your computer

Step 4

Use!

Step 5

From now on, apply only step 4 as many times as you'd like.

Q: Any what about uploading?

A: Do what Robbeh said -_-

Okayyy, I tried gimp, too confused by all those download options -_-, did the Howie’s thing, which is basically a screen capture thingy? Clicked the “Capture Active Window Only” option, and it just captured the entire screen when I selected my half-screen Mozilla window so I’ll just stick with using the Prt-Scn button (or the new alt thingy Robbeh added in) and cutting in paint. Also tried Infranview and ... didn't really get it (not enuf brainpower to try). Eh, in the end I'll just leave my images in crap paint saving format. Thanks for all the fish/help.

Err, I'm a mac user, and I never can quite remember the commands for the various screenshots. I just use a widget on my dashboard; it's pretty simple. It just has options for full screen, window, and drag. It shows a preview before you save, and you can choose what filetype to save everything as. I got it here.

Okay. Tried to download gimp, failed. Miserably.

Didn't get past the 'Downloads' page.

Um, hlpplz?
