I HAVE THE ATTENTION SPAN OF A 6 YEAR OLD AND AM FAR TOO POMPOUS TO READ THAT, BUT FEEL FULLY QUALIFIED TO COMMENT ANYWAY EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL THIS IS REALLY ABOUT. HERE'S MY RESPONSE THAT WON'T CONTRIBUTE TO THE THREAD., PICTURES AND LINKS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST
Hello friends. Today, I would like to invite you to visit and play on my Minecraft server. Before you do though, you need to know what I'm talking about. (Even before I do that, do keep in mind that I'm ignoring the single player "Survival" mode, and that my Minecraft name is "Reis")
What is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a 3D multiplayer sandbox building game, currently in its alpha state. When you start the game, (say, the server that I host, which I will talk about later), you load into a 3D map that can either feature terrain or is simply flat. Movement is in the WASD format, with SPACE to jump and B to access the available blocks.
You will soon realize that the map is entirely composed of blocks. Be it a house, castle, or whatever structure you might see (even the ground you walk on!), all is block in Minecraft. Beyond walking and jumping, you have with you an assorted variety of blocks that differ in color and texture. You should see this immediately at the bottom of your screen, where a slotted bar shows you the blocks that are available to be placed. Pressing B shows you the entire inventory of blocks you can use, and clicking one will replace the currently-selected block in your slotted bar.
WAIT I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO FIND THIS GAME
Yeah okay okay. Before you dive in, make sure you have the latest version of JAVA. The game runs on Java, you see.
You will need to visit Minecraft's website, http://www.minecraft.net/, and register an account. Once you do this, try out the Single Player "Creative Mode", which you can find on the front page, or by clicking this underlined text right here. Jump around, frollic in the grassy hills, place some blocks!
A- Sidestep LEFT
D- Sidestep RIGHT
B- View available blocks (click one to replace the currently selected block)
Right click- Place a block
Left click- Destroy a block
Enter- Set spawn location
R- Jump to spawn location
Note: You can customize all of these controls to your liking.
Okay.. What's the point of this game?
There is no built-in goal in this sandbox game. Remember when you played with Lego blocks? Maybe you still do? In Minecraft, you don't get Lego blocks, but you do get colored cubes that you can place. It's up to your imagination to figure out what you want to do.
Beyond building things by yourself, you are also able to join multiplayer servers. In these servers, you can visit and build on maps where other people build. People will be able to see what you build, you'll get to see what other people make, etc. You can even get together to build something! (Other players can also destroy the works of others, which is a major problem that I will talk about later in this post.)
Note: Pressing T lets you chat.
Okay.. Let's play.
LET'S DO IT
On the Minecraft website, clicking on the multiplayer "Creative Mode" link brings you to a list of servers that host multiplayer maps. You can look through the list to find my server, or you can just look for it at the bottom of this post.
My server info!
The server's name is "IV Freebuild" (Reminder: My name in Minecraft is Reis, so look out for me!).
The server software I use is called MCZall, but you don't care. What's important to know is that the server organizes players into different ranks. Having a certain rank allows you to use certain commands.
Try reading through the MCZall readme, since it explains everything in good detail. Basically though, there are a number of commands that can assist you in building, such as a command to "paint" blocks, a command to mass-fill blocks between two set points, etc. The commands you're allowed to use differ according to what rank you have. Naturally, the higher rank you have, the better commands are available to you. The current ranks available: Guest, Builder, Advanced Builder, Operator
POSTAN MY PICS
Here are some screenshots I took while adventuring. The last two pictures are from one of the maps I host, grass.
It's up to you guys to pretty up the server, though.
