IRC
Server: irc.rizon.net
Port: 6667
Channel: #impsvillage
What is this?
It's our community's own private chat room! Every member of this forum has my personal invitation to come in and chat
So how do I connect?
There are two ways: one for the casual chatter, and one if you really like hanging out there
If you want to stick around, all you need is a standalone IRC client. They're free and most of them are very straightforward. For Windows users, allow me to recommend XChat or mIRC. If you're on a mac, then you should look into either Colloquy, Conversation, or Ircle. Once you have an IRC program, find a way to put irc.impsvillage.com in as the server and 6677 (not 6667!) in as the port, and hit connect! Once you're connected, all you have to do to come chat is type /join #impsvillage -- we can give you other tips and tricks to playing with IRC once you're there
But... I connected and no one there is talking!
It's ok, calm down! Sometimes we're logged in but AFK, other times we're just doing other things. Give it some time, or strike up a conversation with the people that are there. You just need to find us at the right times
What's with the dedicated server?
With our new dedicated server for Imps Village came all kinds of new features -- and the first we're introducing is our own IRC server! If you're asking yourself how running our own IRC server is better, consider these perks: Half our community had problems connecting to Rizon. Large networks have netsplits, which are a pain for an international community. The /list command now only shows OUR channels -- quick and easy to find what you're looking for! Any other server, and /list would return endless cybersex-with-8-year-olds rooms. All of our nicknames are free -- random users don't have them registered anymore. Last but not least, we're our own tech support! Forget your password? Problems with your channel? Someone took your registration? We can handle these problems ourselves now! I might be releasing one other major feature soon... but I' not ready to announce that yet ;-)
Port? What's a port?
Traditionally, IRC servers run on port 6667. It's default, so most IRC clients don't even ask you for a port anymore. If you don't see a place in your client to change the port number, look for an "Advanced" tab. You shouldn't have any problem finding it.
A note to power users, Our IRC server is SSL-enabled so you can encrypt your chat if you're online from somewhere you probably shouldn't be ;-). The SSL port is 6697.
What am I if I don't come to the chat room?
Uncool. Very, very uncool.
Ventrilo
Server: london.voipservers.net
Port: 6256
Password: No password, yay! (No that's not the password, there just isn't one)
What is this?
Garnelaf has oh-so-graciously paid for a 15 slot Ventrilo server for the Imps Village community. 15 slots may seem small to you but don't worry, once the novelty wears off we'll be struggling to fill 5 of those at any one time. Anyway, it's a voice server chat for all of you out there who can't be bothered with typing everything and just want to talk about whatever you please.
What do i need?
Technically all you need are speakers, but ideally you need a microphone too, so you can talk, duh...
Headsets are best though, so your sibling/parent/girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse/dog doesn't get annoyed by the obscene things people say.
So how do I connect?
Firstly, you'll need to download the Ventrilo client from here.
Load up the client, create a user name with phonetics and enter the server info. Ignoring the bindings menu, Go to Setup, and set it up whichever way you like, I recommend a Push to Talk button though. And Click "Connect".
Thats about it, though you might want to adjust your inbound and outbound volume, and your input devices and such, but only mess with them if you know what you're doing, or have been told to do so by someone else who knows what they are doing.
